OK, I know people have been waiting for the next video so here it is. I just have to say that I was out of town on vacation and so this newsletter is a week behind.

    New Newsletter Format

Very quickly I have to let you know that this is the new format of my newsletter. While poking around the internet looking for a newsletter format that made for easier reading I came away with what you are reading now.

    Playing Videos From Your Desktop

A DJ Guide Newsletter subscriber kindly mentioned that an 'mpg' version would help them out because they use dial up and they sometimes loose the stream.

Initially I told the subscriber I would have 'MPG' file format ready for this edition of the newsletter. But after testing the 'MPG' version the file size was simply too large and took up too much space.

So, in order to play the 'wmv' files from your desktop, using your mouse, simply right click on the file name and choose 'save as'. This will prompt you to save the file on your computer.

Once it's saved on your compute,r using your mouse, double click on the file where you saved it and it will play back in Windows Media Player.

RSS News feed - Beta Testing

What is RSS? RSS stand for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Syndication. It's a high powered way of getting current information. I'll be testing this new way to bring you up to date information more rapidly right to your desktop or though an RSS reader.

The goal with this new system is to put you in control of pulling the information down from my RSS feed that way you can avoid missing my newsletters due to ISP spam filters and I can avoid getting bounced emails and email pirates.

Advanced Beat Mixing with DJ Statik

In this video on advanced mixing DJ Statik of Ill Vibe Collective takes you through the steps of mixing two separate records.

Some DJ's might not define this as advanced beat mixing but I do. If you think about it there is a lot more I could have done on basic mixing. We could have broken the basic mixing techniques video down even more but we thought we would just give you the good stuff and not the boring stuff. As a matter of fact we shot two different scenes on basic mixing techniques.

One scene which is now called Basic Mixing Techniques that is live and ready for you to download if you haven’t already and the other scene that we axed included mixing with two of the same records to mixing with two different records but we figured that would be too confusing.

Things To Look For In The Video

When you are looking at the video pay close attention to what DJ Statik does with regards to setting up his mix. Note how he states how you can use basic mixing principles again to break down how to recognize the snare and kicks and how to count the bars of the music.

    • He pre determines his BPM because he is already familiar with his records (this is the most crucial skill you can develop as a DJ. Familiarizing yourself with your records will help you create better mixes.)
    • His records are pre marked
    • He cues his records at the marker points
    • He plays the record on turntable #2(furthest away from you) first to get a sense of rhythm and timing,
    • He plays the record on turntable #2(closest to you) in his headphones ONLY.

(This is where you set up your mix before you go live with it. This is again is another skill set that you need to master. If you don’t have a sense of rhythm and timing it will be extremely difficult for you to mix properly.)

After you get good at it like DJ Statik all you have to do is give the record a few cuts back and forth and bring the second record in as he will demonstrate. Normally if you want a smooth mix then you would slowly move the cross fader over, in this case from left to right.

Look at what he does next. After the two record are playing what sounds like ‘in time’ he use the ‘Pitch Adjustment’ on the turntable to tweak the record in order to get both records to play ‘in-time' like he wants them.

What I mean by ‘in time’ is that both the records snare and kick play at the same time. One on top of the other.

    Utilizing Your Mixers EQ

Watch as DJ Statik explains how to get the most out of your mixer by using the equalizers. Listen closely as he tells you how to use the different frequencies and when and why you should use them.

There are more video clips on the way. The second round of shooting will be completed before the holidays come upon us here in the US.
