International
DJ Expo 2005
We'll
after having taking the walk though the International
DJ Expo in Atlantic City, NJ I can only say I wish
I brought more money because the prices on the latest
DJ equipment were UNREAL.
But
before I get to that I just want to give you a quick rundown
of who was there, that I noticed anyway.
Denon had the most attractive booth (if you can read between the
lines) and their equipment was set up in small kiosks. Most
of their equipment was CD turntables.
Stanton
has a similar set up and talking with Jim, the Stanton rep,
he said the reason for the image change and new look and
feel to the equipment was because research told them that
branding was the way to go in order to make a stable name
for themselves and not just another DJ equipment manufacturer.
The
Pioneer
booth seemed empty for some reason even though their biggest product
boost was their DVJ-X1
DJ but there was no demonstration
of it! I was kind of disappointed with Pioneer.
Right
across the isle was Ortofon were they had a demonstration
of 4 DJ's using Ortofon needles on Numark gear. Now that
was exciting. Here are some pictures from that booth.

If
you don't see the pictures click here for the online version
of this newsletter. There
wasn't much else worth taking pictures of sorry to say.
Numark
really disappointed me because they were not showcasing
their newest arrival in the in Numark
iDJ Mixing Console.
They really has a dismal booth from my perspective.
Gemini
almost had me for a second. I talked to the rep but he was
really pushy. I took the their CD set up for a spin anyway.
It was all white with chrome accents. Initially the look
was cool but it got boring real fast especially after using
their CD player and mixer. The faders were nice and loose
but it still felt cheap in my hands.
Mike
at the Rane booth really had me sold though. He gave me
personal tour of their new Empath mixer with knobs for finer
mixing and
Rane Serato Scratch Live which after
seeing it in action and playing with it it has Final Scratch
beat hands down. From the user friendly interface to the
live support. It was very easy to pick up. He said that
only had one more left out of 12 they initially brought
with them. And at $500 a pop they really made out like bandits.
The
rest of the expo were smaller manufacturers of digital products.
I may have missed them but I was really disgruntled when
I didn't see Technics or Vestax. There were alot
lighting and small vendors trying to sell their stuff and
less than a handful of speaker manufacturers. But Cerwin-Vega
definitely made their presence known. Talk about BOOM! BAP!.
Prices at the DJ Expo
Here
are some
examples. The Shure M44-7H cartridge usually sells
for $99 and on a good day for about $80 at
Overstock.com but at the show it was only
$65. I picked up the N44-7Z replacement
needle. I'll give you a report on it after
I use it a bit.
Another
door buster was at the Stanton booth where the Pro 3000
headphones were selling for $65 if memory serves me correctly.
The Stanton M 304 mixer was also selling for $200. Their

T-120C was only $265 or close to it.
I
saw people walking out with Pioneer
CDJ-800's 2 and 4 at a time.
These were the best prices I've ever seen. I will most definitely
come with a phat wallet next time. If you didn't make it
this year you should need to go next year.
Now
I didn't sign up for the workshops because I didn't want
to commit myself before I saw the expo. But overall I was
sold on it and next time I hope to attend the entire expo,
workshop and all. One word of caution, children are not
allowed in the expo.
