    Secret Project:

I am thrilled to be able to tell you that over the course of the last several months I've been working on a secret project.   I've always wanted to do something like this and when the opportunity dropped in my lap I had to take advantage of it.

As some of my longtime newsletter subscribers may know I've talked about doing a book for DJ's and this has been my secret project along with my partner John Hillage who is the mastermind behind this secret project.  It will not be like any other eBook or regular book for DJ's you might have read.

This eBook will answer many of the questions and secrets you have always wanted to know and it will have a secret weapon that no other DJ eBook has.  But I can't reveal it yet.  This eBook will totally transform your understanding of how to DJ.

DJ Guide News - International DJ Expo 2006

Well, after getting back from the International DJ Expo I haven't stopped running which is why this newsletter is getting to you a couple of weeks late. Some of you might now that this web site is just I maintain on side and not full time job and this is the firs time I've had a chance to collect my thoughts about the expo.

I was only able to make it to the show for one day and my plans on getting my new mixer went to the toilet due to my car needing what seemed like a major overahual which basiclly rendered me short on cash to buy what I wanted at the show. There were some absolutely great deals too. Especially from Vestax, Stanton and Pioneer

I tested mixers from Numark, Stanton, Pioneer and Denon and here is what I thought. I tested turntables also but my focus was on mixers and sound qauality and form and function.

The Numark DM1050 is a very good sounding mixer. I used the Numark PHX headphones of course but the sounding coming from the mixer was excellent. The EQ very good. It does an very good job of cutting the Hi Mid and Low frequencies. Actually I was very impressed with this because it did such a very good job and the gain on the mixer was also very good. It gave pleanty of headroom.

The faders are clean and precise but they feel a little cheap. It feels like they heads could snap right off. I like my faders with a little more meat on them and a little more resistance. These faders seemed to move on their own. But nontheless they do an excellent job of mixing. I did not recognize any bleeding.

I was a little disapointed in that the EQ did not give me a center locking position so I could feel the knob lock into the center position rather than having to look down at the mixer while mixing.

The Stanton-M.303 10 3Channel Dance Mixer with Balanced Outputs was my favorite mixer for the midrange price. When I took hold of the fader and EQ's they made me feel like I had control over the equipment. I didn't get that feeling with the Numark 1050.

The EQ on the 303 was just as impressive as the Numark 1050 but the 303 had that center locking position which made all the differenc in the world with regards to DJing. I knew exactly where the center position was when I was mixing and didn't have to look at EQ to find dead center. It's little things like that you need to be aware of when buying your equipment.

Another thing abut the C.303 was the tactile rubber knobs. They didn't feel cheap and it didn't feel like my fingers were going to slip off the knobs. They are shaped like tall volcanos. Wide at the base and skinnt at the top. I thouhght this small feature was a plus.

Naturally I put on the Stanton Pro 1000 headphones which sounded better than the PHX headphones from Numark. There were much more comfortable too.

Pioneer definitley made it the top of the list as far as mixers in general. From the DJM 1000 to the Pioneer DJM400 Professional DJ Mixer 2Channel with Digital Sampling and Effects. Accross the board all of their mixers sounded excellent and I would recommend any of them. Pioneer did a great job of improving their mixers with regard to sound quality. Not that their mixers ever lacked but the overall quality among the DJM familiy was quite impressive. From form and function they seem to have their DJ mixers down pat.

One thing I noticed was Pioneers heavy emphasis on the Pioneer DVJX1 DJ Video Player. It looks like they really want to be the first to make headway in this area for the video DJ. The demo of the Pioneer MK3 was phenominal.

I did not demo the vestax simpley becuase they did not have any mixers available for the public to demo. but I trust their products are as solid as ever.

Unfortunately at the bottom of the list was Denon. Now I am not saying that Denon as a poor product I am just saing it came in a lot weaker than its competitors.

I tested the Denon DNS3500 Professional Direct Drive CDMP3 Player with the spining platter. Overall it was weaker than the other CD players. The spinning platter gave it a nice feel but the functionality of the CD player was very busy. The bells and whistles are what really carry this gear such as the 7 on-board effects. I think what was throwing me off about this CD player were the mixers. The X1500S and the X100. They sounded awful in the HP1000 headphones. The highs were too high and the bass was just not present enough to justify its existence.

I was expecting a little more from Denon because the have come such a long way. I guess if I hadn't tested out the other gear first then I might say Denon did a big 'come up' and maybe they did but compared to the other manufacturers Denon still needs some help. They are still a step up from Gemini but they still have a way to go to reach that true mid grade DJ gear status in my book.

I did not test Vestax and Gemini products this time. Maybe next year if they have demos for people to play with.
