Being A Club DJ; Some things to think about.
Most clubs use the Technics SL1200MK2 Direct Drive Turntables. Technics don't come with needles. The Shure M44 7H needles will suffice. They reduce skipping and wear on the vinyl.
Mixers can vary but to get started practicing then I would suggest the Vestax PMC05 Pro II or for a little cheaper the Numark DM1002X mixer.

Headphones are also a must to monitor the music as he is playing it. He will need headphones in order to mix one song to the next in a seamless fashion.
Altogether expect to spend close to $1000. DJ equipment is not cheap. The Technics 1200 will last a lifetime. I’ve had mine over 10 years now. Not one problem. The mixers will last between 4 and 7 years depending on use. But the faders can be replaced if they fail to perform.
There are some other alternative. Stanton makes a complete package for $699. It’s called the Stanton DJLab 3.0. This is a true all in one mid grade system and in my opinion the only true all in one mid-grade system.
There are $400 systems but I don’t' suggest buying them. They will not stand the test of time because they are made with cheaper parts and they can through a DJ’s techniques off going back and forth between a cheaper system and the professional grade DJ equipment. People will and do notice an amateur DJ.
Here is a comparison chart I put together of the cheaper DJ equipment.

As far as making a living as a DJ, I would suggest keeping a day job. Most DJ's I know have one including myself. The popular DJ's on MTV and VH1 and others also produce music and have various endorsement deals that give them a very nice income.
Being a mobile DJ is nice alternative where weddings and private parties can generate a substantial income. A club DJ status is hard to reach unless a great deal of recognition is created and a smart marketing plan is executed.
