Recording for the first time with Sound Forge

In this tutorial I will take you through the steps of recording with Sound Forge for the first time. This is a very basic tutorial and is not meant for those of you who already have experience using recording software.

SF is a very versatile recording software program and can do much more than what I am about teach in this tutorial.

In this tutorial you will learn:

Preparing Your Computer To Record

There are a number of steps involved to make sure you have the proper hardware and configurations. If you're already using speakers with your computer then you're halfway there. If you don't then you'll need computer speakers or headphones in order to complete this tutorial successfully. If you don't have a sound card then I suggest you buy one from this company.

In order to confirm that your computer can receive sound you need to open the Volume Control window.

Click on Start then Programs.

  1. Select Accessories (Figure - 1a)

  2. Select Entertainment (Figure - 1a)

  3. Click on Volume Control (Figure - 1a)

You've just opened the Master Volume controls.

Now click on Options and select Properties. (Figure - 1b)

You've just opened the Properties window.

Now click on Recording. (Figure - 1c)

You need to choose the sources of your sound material.

Click Microphone if your using a microphone to record or click on Line-In for all other sources.

If your going to be using both just select both by click on the appropriate boxes.

Now click on Select under the Line Input or Analog Mix
or click on Select under Microphone if your using a microphone.(Figure - 1d)

You just prepared your computer to record using Sound Forge.

Create A New File and Set Preferences

It's time to create a new file in Sound Forge.

Click on Start then Programs.

Select Sound Forge from the Programs Menu. Sound Forge will open. (Figure - 2a)

Click on File (see red arrow in Figure - 2a) then New for a new file.

The Record Preferences window will open next. (Figure - 2b)

Set the Recording Preferences.

By default Sound Forge sets the sample rate to 44.100 (CD Quality), 16 bit and stereo. Don't change them. (Figure - 2b)

If it's not set to these settings do so now and then click OK .

Open The Record Window.

Click on the Red Record Button to open up the record window.(Figure - 3a)

The record button will appear to be grayed out but when you move your mouse over it it turn red.

Recording With Sound Forge

Click on the Round Record Button to start recording.

NOTE. The Round Record Button turns to a Square Stop Button when recording is in process.(Figure - 3b)

You will see the word Recording flashing in Red. This lets you know recording is in process.

Play your source material or speak into your microphone.

Sound Forge is now recording your source material.

When your done recording click on the Stop Button.

Your recording will look something like this. (Figure - 3c)

To hear what you just recorded click on the Triangle Play Button in the Record Window. (Figure - 3b)

If you don't like it just repeat the Record steps above.

Saving Your File

From the Sound Forge menu click on File then Save As.

The following window will open. (Figure - 3d)

You can sound name your file and choose to save in a variety of formats including MP3, Real and Wave.

Sound forge can also read many of the popular formats and convert them into other formats.

Once you've chosen your format click on Save.

Congratulations! You've successfully completed your first recording using Sound Forge.
